I have just IC'd a replacement drive and am trying to run Guided Setup. I keep getting the message "Failed. Could not connect." when it trys to make the initial call. The original drive is hosed so I can't try that to determine if the modem suddenly went bad.

Any suggestions?

It sounds like your InstantCake build was successful. "Failed. Could not connect." can happen for any number of reasons. First thing to check is whether or not your phone line is correctly plugged into the unit. Also, ensure you check your phone dialing options before making the first test call. If you are certain everything is set up properly (and that your phone line is working properly) that it could be that the service provider line is busy, or for whatever reason, the TiVo servers are unavailable - from time to time this happens with all TiVo units (upgraded and not upgraded) so its not something to be alarmed about.

My guess is that you've either not plugged in the phone line, or your dialing preferences need to be adjusted.

Just upgraded this evening using the new utility download. Got infamous device error message (I assume the infamous 51) so did a c&de. During guided setup, if fails when trying to connect.

When I looked at the options, the dial prefix was defaulted to "*#". I listened in on a phone and heard it go to a rapid busy signal about the third tone in. I removed the prefix; this time it dialed the full number before giving me a rapid busy signal. Was it correct to remove the prefix? Am I now just having bad luck hitting a busy signal?

TIA.

Seems odd that there would be anything set for the dialing prefix (or the call waiting prefix) if you did a 'clear and delete everything' as your final step in preparing the drive. With that said, your dialing prefix and call waiting prefix should whatever they should be -- ie, in most cases, "empty" for your dialing prefix, and *70 for call-waiting.
