I downloaded the ISO image, burned it to a CD, and booted from the CD-ROM.

It goes well through the part about "Push F1-F6 from more details" (or whatever) but when I hit Enter to boot up, it ends up giving me a "Kernel panic: attempted to kill init!" and stops.

Looking back up a few lines, it seems that the problem starts with:

"Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000024"

To rule out a hardware problem, I tried booting with Knoppix, and that boots up fine.

I've downloaded the image again, and I'll try burning it on a different computer, to rule out a ISO or a bad burn.

But aside from that, what's going on here? How do I get this thing to boot?

Could be a bad burn. Could also be your computer; its rare, but every now and then we hear about an incompatible one. If it turns out, please report as much information about your system configuration as possible.

Thanks for the help. I tried it in a different computer (actually it's a frankenstein of old parts, with no case) and it's working. Basically it's a PII 450 on a BH6 motherboard with a 3DFX Banshee video card.

I had tried it in two other computers. Both are AMD (one's a 1700+, the other a 2000+), each with 512MB of ram, and have the same motherboard. K7VTA3

Should I be concerned that this old PII motherboard recognizes the new 160GB drive as 137GB?

I also have the same problem where the bootup stops with the final line saying:
Code ac aa 04 c0 75 fa 8b44 24 08 83 f8 04 77 33 83 f8 03 72 2e
<0>Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

Also preceded by: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000d54.

I tried to upload screenshots, but they were too big. I can email them to you if they might help.

I bought the IC CD and it was shipped. Is it possible to download a copy of IC free if I show proof of having bought the CD? I would prefer not to spend another $20 to rule out disk error. I will try different cables for now, as I don't have easy access to another computer.

My setup is a Soyo Dragon Ultra KT400 chipset with an AMD Athlon XP3000 (Barton core) processor, Kingston HyperX 512 MB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 3 Ti200 video card, a Samsung TS-552B DVD-RW +/- disc drive, and I'm trying to install a 200 GB Seagate hard drive for a Phillips Series 1 Standalone model HDR212. I have the correct IC disc and I'm positive the drives were connected correctly. I have pictures to prove it :-) Any help woud be appreciated.

I have added screenshots above in the hope that they can help.
