Well, I finally pulled the trigger and bought a new, Hughes SD-DVR80 series 2 DirecTiVo (we have a series 1) and the 140 hr PTVNet upgrade. While I wait for the packages to arrive, I have a few questions about setup that I'm wondering if anyone here can answer.

1. Should I get the new DT working first, before doing the upgrade or just pop the new drive in before powering anything on? I'm leaning toward the former as I think it'd help trouble-shoot any problems should something go wrong, but I may be wrong...

2. My wireless network uses WEP (and DHCP). I plan on using the Linksys USB200M wired Ethernet adapter connected to a Linksys WET-11 wireless bridge. I know I can get the WET-11 working with the wireless network, so I shouldn't have any problem getting the DT on the network, right? If I wasn't using WEP, then I could just use a USB wireless adapter, right?

3. There is no 3. ;)

4. Is there an SSH module for the DT? Using plain-text protocols gives me the willies. :) What about moving everything over from HTTP to HTTPS or is the DT just too slow to handle both tuners, playback, and the encryption related to these protocols?

5. I've read that I should probably just leave the phone connection unplugged after I do the upgrade. Is this true? Downside is that PPV can no longer be ordered directly through the DT. Upside is that any upgrades being pushed down probably won't automatically (stomp?) the hacks that are included with the PTVnet upgrade. Is this pretty much why we should leave the phone unplugged? I'm assuming that, since I'd be leaving the phone disconnected, there'd be no problem with the fact that I use Vonage beyond remembering to copy the "slow the modem down" code down from my current DT to the new one for activation.

I'm sure there are other questions I have -- probably all just as banal -- but I cannot remember any more right now.

Thanks,
sig

Oh...

6. I found a stereo mini (1/8") to M DB9 connector in my cable box. I'm not sure if it's from my old series 1 TiVo or my current series 1 DirecTiVo. Should this cable also work with my new series 2 DT? Do they normally come with this serial cable?

Thanks,
sig

1. Definitely test your unit first; if there is anything wrong with, best to determine that prior to opening it up and adding more variables to the equation.

2. Your current wireless plan should work. We always recommend wired over wireless because, as you know, wireless connections can be unstable. You may find yourself rebooting your TiVo every now and then if it loses its IP address. As for using a standard USB wireless adapter, I don't think that is going to work, unless it uses the same drivers that the USB200M uses. You don't want to NOT use WEP; you'd be leaving the door open for lots of nastiness if you don't.

3. n/a

4. Somewhere out there, there is an SSH for TiVo units. I looked into it awhile back. I have no idea where its at. I looked into it as part of the PTVnet offering, however abandoned the idea because there is no way to automate the encryption key generation which is unique to each unit. So there you have it... I don't recommend you go down that road unless you are particularly technical. As far as I know, there is no secure web server for TiVoWeb. Please see the support info regarding password protection of your TiVoWeb installation. Used a wired network and secure it. And for an extra layer of security, don't map the ports on your router when you don't need to; that will keep the baddies out.

5. It doesn't matter whether you leave the phone line plugged in or not. The dialing prefix has been changed so that the daily call won't happen. You can overrride this. There are currently no known upgrades to these units, so you should be safe for now. Its up to you.

As for your serial connection... best bet is just to try it... serial port settings are 9600,8,n,1 -- use teraterm pro. You can always get a serial cable for < $10 at 9thtee.com

Thx

Do you have to do anything special to turn on the bash shell on the serial port or is it always on? (Which would mildly surprise me.) Is this the same for the series 1 DT? (Still waiting for my series 2 to come in and I'm chomping on the bit to get playing. :) ) Guess I'll fire up minicom and take a look.

Thanks for the help.

Ah, sorry. :) After the upgrade's been applied, I'd have been surprised to find it _not_ turned on. I meant before anything's applied; just the stock DirecTiVo. I forgot my USB serial converter, otherwise, I'd have fired up minicom on my Linux laptop and checked it out. I'll have to wait at least another day.

Thanks for the help.

Ah... No, that door is shut on a 'stock' system (Series1 units, as well)...

Cheers
