Sorry if this was discussed somewhere else (I couldn't find it).

If I'm new to Tivo, and haven't purchased ANY equipment yet, can anyone recommend a good starting unit? I currently have DirecTV, and use an HD receiver. I'm not going to buy an overpriced HD Tivo Unit, so am going to run my existing HD Receiver on one input (only for when I will be watching something in HD), and will use the Tivo unit as my primary viewing unit (since most of what we watch in non-HD anyway) - I have the necessary cabling to my TV to support this (also have ethernet to the TV as well).

I'm seeing lots of neat discussion in here, but don't want to start-off with the wrong base unit. So, given this information, if you were starting from scratch today, which Tivo unit would you start with??

Thanks...

Consider the "overpriced" HD unit -- dual inputs (dual HDTV tuners and TiVo in one box, for under $1000.) That is the way to go.

Yeah, I already fell for that one. Paid $1,000 for my current HD receiver (when they first came out), and maybe watch HD programming 1% of the time. Not going to pay another $800+ for technology I rarely use...

Since I'm with Directv, I'm looking more at the R10 unit. A friend had his installed last week and is very satisfied. I just wanted to keep my options open for modifications/hacking the unit in the future, and it sounds like the R10 is too new to tell. It just seems like there is a HUGE amount of information out there, and I didn't want to buy the wrong unit to start with. Thanks...

the only problem with this is that they are changing the hd delivery format to mpeg4 in 2007. the price for the hd tivo box is now around 200 bucks less. so this is not a repeat of the ripoffs that used to be directv prices.

Changing the delivery format in two years doesn't mean that all existing receivers are not going to work in two years.

dtv has said in their press release that existing hd tivo owners will get new boxes perhaps on dtv's dime. so yes it does mean that.

Great, so how about a link to the press release you speak of.

the above link is from part of the release. there is a specific release that I am searching for that says what I said earlier but I didnt know I would need to prove it to anyone since most of us on tivo community have read it a couple of weeks ago. you could also present yourself as less hostile because thats the way your posts read.

if this link works you will see the difference in the thead pre and post dtv press release. I did a google search and found it back then but cant find it now. regardless directv's future does not include tivo.

We know about DirecTV's future and that it has nothing to do with TiVo. That is another layer of off-topic information on top of a layer that is already off-topic.

To the original poster - don't confuse the trend with reality.

Some of us have had our $1000 HR10-250's since they became available last April and have enjoyed them immensely. It doesn't matter that DirecTV will offer different products towards the end of this year, and that the ones we bought last year may not work in five. You have to live your life at some point.

Otherwise, you may as well not even go outside. We are all going to die anyway.
