Upgraded Hughes dvr80 with 140 HR Replacement Drive Kit with PTVnet.
Network appears to be running okay ( Can access via web ).

Navigating in TVWebplus to User Interface and then selecting Now Showing I obviously see the recorded programs on the Tivo. There is the View link to the right and when I select a program I am unable to view the recorded show in Windows Media Player .. it starts and then stops ( first of course had to install TyShow for Windows on my pc ..win2k running ) Referencing the common q&a for this it mentions that vserver needs to be running on the Tivo.

I would have thought that this and/or other appropriate program would already be on the 'pre-loaded' PTVnet drive.

Certainly am missing and/or doing something wrong.

Any assistance is appreciated

Definitely missing something and possibly doing something wrong, as well. Video extraction is not part of PTVnet, and as far as I know, we've mentioned that explicity in a variety of places on these forums. If there is anything in the product description that is misleading, please point it out, and we'll get that addressed, I thought we were very clear in the product descriptions of what PTVnet offers.

As for doing what you want to do, you can install vserver if you wish, or any of the other tools that are out there. Ensure you also apply what is discussed here or none of these tools will work.

The instructions at the aforementioned link are very straightforward and I would recommend you do not post questions at DDB on the use of them as it is intended for advanced users, and the instructions do work well when followed properly.

And a final word of warning...

... to those who are looking to head down that path. Be extremely careful when modifying the installation we've provided. If you make a mistake when doing things like transferring files over to your TiVo using FTP, and/or editing system startup files, etc, you could very well render yourself with an unbootable TiVo. Should you wind up in that situation, we cannot provide warranty support for you (restoring your hard drive) so please please please do your reading, and make sure you understand what you are doing before you actually do it. If that means reading again, and again, then please do so.

The information available at DDB is extremely reliable and all that is required is patience when it comes to searching and reading. Chances are if you have a question it has been answered many many times over, so use the "search" button and "google" as well and be patient. Good things are worth waiting for and working towards...
