When my new drive arrives, I'd like to back it up before installing. I currently have the Sleeper.ISO and while nothing else on it works (e.g., networking) the backup and restrore seem to be fine.

Should I continue to use it or is there something, faster, newer, better, cheaper, etc.?

What's recommended for backing up drives?

Well, we don't recommend you take the drives we've prepared and put them anywhere other than your TiVo. If its something you feel you must do, then by all means do so at your own risk.

With that said, MFStools should work fine.

I fully understand your comment but my question is I thought I read that you modify slightly mfs_tools for your needs. Will a standard backup with out recordings get all of the software you put on the drive ?
mfstool backup -6so /mnt/mydrive/os.bck /dev/tivodrive or something of that sort.

I think my previous post says it all. I'm not going to get more specific than that; the point is that if you want to back it up, you are on your own. We don't want you to do it, because we don't want you to take the risk. I'm not going to help you take that risk by giving you specifics that might encourage you to do so.
