As great as it is, I want to dump my high speed Internet connection. They keep raising the price and I find I'm just reading news and discussion boards, so I plan on using cheap dialup and free wireless access in my area.

Since my PC and Tivo will just be using the regular telephone, I wanted to hook them up together with a crossover cable and be able to transfer files from the Tivo to the PC and access the Tivo via telnet and FTP.

I have searched the discussions here and I understand that you can just plug them directly together with the crossover cable, but I don't have a DCHP server program running on either. So I guess I have to set up some kind of static I.P. between them. What's the best way to do that?

Is there some DCHP server program built into XP Pro that I have to turn on or is that only on a server version of XP? My setup works fine now with a router doing the DHCP for my PC and the Tivo. I notice that transfer speeds are limited to about 1.75 mbps with this setup.

I think I can manage using the net_install program to set a static I.P. address on the Tivo. I just am not too sure what I need to adjust on the PC side to make this work as I want.

Any tips? Is there a tutorial out there? Can I use the router without the high speed internet connection somehow to handle the DHCP?

How do I go about assigning these addresses? By controlling the router configuration? Something using control panel? I actually located a free DHCP server program to run on my PC so I think I may be able to remove the router from the loop and just connect them with a crossover cable. Before I start messing around, I just want a clear picture of the setup in my head. I'm not quite there yet.

Can't get it to work. The free DHCP program can't be configured for it. I'd like to do it without any router or hub, but I guess I can't get around it.
