Okay, I'll bite:
First major question that I'm sure many folks want to know...
... Will you offer an "InstantCake"-like .iso download offering of this product?
I'm sure you can imagine there is a sizeable crowd of us who would prefer to do it all ourselves, but the current available processes available around the net are outdated and a real pain-in-the-posterior...
Many thanks,
MrMike
For those of you interested in networking your Series2 DirecTV units, we've finally got a product for you. If you already know what we are talking about or you just want to go right to the product page for ordering, just go here.
The basic idea is this:
- replace the drive or drives in your TiVo with a newer and bigger one
- plug in a USB 2.0 Ethernet adapter
- boot your TiVo and it comes up on the network with a DHCP IP address
- do cool things
So, what do we mean by cool things? Well, first and foremost, your unit will now have an IP address on your home network. And yes, folks, that means you have to have a home network. If you don't know what that is already, there's not much we can do to help you here - go get yourself a Linksys router, or something comparable, and build yourself a network. Turn on DHCP (at least temporarily) and then you'll be ready to get your TiVo up and running in a way that your computer can talk to it.
You'll also need a compatible USB 2.0 Ethernet adapter. Examples are, the Netgear FA120 which is hard to find now, but after December 22nd, 2006 we now have updated drivers supporting the Linksys USB200M and the Trendnet TU2-ET100 available here.
For those interested in wireless connectivity, use of a bridging device or gaming adapter may also be added, such as the Buffalo 802.11G converter.
So what have we installed that can make your unit more useful to you? Well, here is a start:

TiVoWebPlus 1.3.1

telnet/ftp

Busybox Linux Utils

Other miscelleneous and useful tools
TiVoWebPlus 1.3.1
TiVoWeb is a killer-app for your TiVo. Once your TiVo is up and running on your network, TiVoWeb is most likely to be your primary interface into your TiVo from any other location than in front of your TiVo. And most importantly, you can access TiVoWeb and interact with your TiVo when someone else is already in front of your TV. What can you do with TiVoWeb? Well, pretty much anything you can do with a remote, and a whole lot more. Just a few of the features include the ability to schedule recordings, browse, sort, mass delete, and edit descriptions of the content listed in your "Now Playing" list, schedule and reprioritize season passes, send messages, drive your TiVo with a spitting image of the TiVo remote control on your screen, and the list goes on and on and on. Even more interesting is that there are a variety of TiVoWeb modules that have been developed by other folks that can also be installed and used through the web interface.
TiVoWeb and TiVoWebPlus are not products we've developed at PTVupgrade. They are free software packages released under the GPL, and we've incorporated them, made a few customizations, and also added a few popular modules that we think folks will find useful.
Here is a link to the TiVoWebPlus home page where you can find some technical details about TiVoWebPlus and TiVoWeb. If you want to see some screen shots of TiVoWebPlus, check out this link.
telnet and ftp
The cornerstones of networked computers are telnet and ftp. If you don't know what these are, then you probably don't need to. In short, telnet will allow you to remotely access your TiVo because it really is a Linux computer. The shell you will have access to is called BASH. FTP is a simple application for allowing you to move files to/from your TiVo. These are standard UNIX/Linux utilities and you can use google to find out more about them.
BusyBox
BusyBox is a toolkit of Linux utilities that have been "ported" to run on your TiVo DVR. For those that are into the whole UNIX/Linux thing, and want to remotely access their TiVo and do geeky things, BusyBox provides a whole bunch of neat tools, most of which will work on your TiVo. Here is a link to the BusyBox web site.
Other Useful Tools
We've included some other popular little goodies, all of which live in the /ptvupgrade directory.
RoadMap
Having a networked TiVo is a wonderful thing. Many many more things coming, but let's crawl before we walk. We'll be offering a variety of downloadable utilities you'll be able to easily install and configure on your networked unit. We'll also offer remote installation services, as we currently do for Series1 units networked with TurboNet and CacheCard. Stay tuned for more details and surprises.
A Note to our Followers
Although many of the software products we distribute are not developed by us, they are freely available and we redistribute these tools in accordance with the terms under which they are licensed. We appreciate the efforts of the many folks who have taken time to create useful tools for modifying your TiVo, and made contributions to the TiVo upgrade community.
With that said: installing, integrating and configuring these tools is no small matter - we feel we provide a valuable service to our customers and those not technical or too busy to pursue these endeavors on their own. We recognized the value of such services over six years ago when DVRupgrade was founded, and we believe that today, more than ever, people want a service such as ours.

The topic and first post of the thread specifically addresses the specifics of the PTVnet offering that we are rolling out in the next several weeks. It is not intended to be bait for a discussion of what we haven't announced, or don't intend to do.
Our announcements certainly don't prevent folks from doing-it-all themselves, however the current product offering is intended to be interesting to those who either can't or don't want to.
The specific answer to your question is,
"Wrong question, wrong place, wrong time..." :)
Please let's please keep this thread on topic and not use it as a means to discuss our future (and confidential) plans...
Thx.

Pioneer DVD-R units?

Cool. Will this work with the Pioneer DVD-R Series units? I seem to recall that their kernel is a bit different from other Series 2 units, supporting the larger hard drives (as well as the DVD-R units, of course).

Currently, PTVnet is announced for Series2 DirecTV products. At the bottom of this page is a list of the supported units (all DirecTV Series2 systems).

What about wireless?
This is GREAT news!
What about wireless? Will this initial kit support wireless adapters? If not, what's the estimated time frame for wireless support?
TIA,
Stan :)

"standard" wireless bridges (802.11G and 802.11B should work fine, along with the USB Ethernet adapter). We haven't tested them yet, and we will make them available once we have.

FYI - we've just verified that the Linksys WGA54G works fine (we've configured and tested one using WEP) and we are adding it to the web site right now)

Am I misunderstanding the question? I've already got a 2nd drive that I've bought from PTVupgrade, and I'd like any replacement that I purchase for a primary drive to automatically fix (or reformat) the secondary one so it works.
Isn't that the function of your instantCake product? If getting the PTVnet disk requires that we also buy instantCake to fix our old disks manually, then I think you've made a mistake.

I think you are misunderstanding the topic of this thread. If it continues to drift in the direction of InstantCake, I will need to prune it, in order to keep it on-track.
The topic here is PTVnet - folks, please read the first post. It has NOTHING to do with InstantCake.

OK, I'll be more specific. Does the PTVnet product have capabilities similar to your instantCake product? What I'm asking here is if a previously purchased (and currently in use) secondary drive from you will automatically be "fixed" or cleaned up when the PTVnet drive in installed as the primary drive?
I know that with a stock TiVo primary that this will NOT work and I'd either need to get a new drive from you or the instantCake product to fix the drive that I have. What I want to know is if PTVnet is smarter about secondary drives than the stock TiVo software and if can buy your new product without breaking the old one that I bought from you.
It's a reasonable question, and it's about the PTVnet product, so please stop slapping me for asking.

None of our replacement drive kits can do anything with the drives that are previously in your system. A replacement drive kit is designed such that you remove the drive(s) currently in your unit, and replace it/them with the new kit. This has not changed with PTVnet or any of our other replacement drive kits.
To clarify further... PTVnet is a group products, we prefer the term "architecture" however most will want to relate that to a specific product or products. So in this case, the PTVnet products we are talking about are replacement drive kits with PTVnet installed on them. InstantCake is completely different. InstantCake is an inexpensive, DIY tool which builds a basic replacement drive kit from a CD distribution. We have not announced any InstantCake products with support for PTVnet. And at the risk of sounding repetitious, this thread is not about InstantCake. If people have InstantCake questions, they can certainly be asked in other areas of the forum, however we are not going to answer any specific questions about "plans for the future" as it is not appropriate.

You were not being slapped, and your question was not unreasonable; again, attempting to keep the thread on-topic, and will continue to do so...

Hi,
Would this allow me to disconnect the phone line and do all the daily calls and guide update using the bradband connection ?
Thanks,
George
Daily calls can be supressed via PTVshield (the daily call is no longer fundamentally necessary because the validity of your subscription is now established via the status of your subscription with DirecTV). Guide updates always have occured via satellite, not the daily call.

Given that you are including TiVoWeb / TiVoWeb Plus, and the documentation (FAQ) you link to talks about streaming video to other computers on your network, am I correct in assuming that this functionality is included? (The documentation is a little unclear if TyShow needs to be installed seperately for this to work.)
Assuming it does work, can you view streaming media with a non-windows OS? (The documentation talks about running MS Media Player -- not exactly an option for those of us in the Linux world. (Don't know about Mac...))
Please take a look at the first post in this thread - the details of the recently announced PTVnet offering are there; it does not include streaming video.

Another silly question: Will TiVo let me order the HMO directly from them once I get my DirecTiVo attached to the network? I know it's a free option for standalone TiVo's already...
-dwx
HMO is for standalone units only. "standalone" means not-DirecTiVo. The answer is "no."

Any word on HR10-250?
Not supported under PTVnet (please see previous posts in this very thread on that topic).
Folks, I've been diligently responding to your questions, but I'm not going to continue to answer the same ones over and over again. Please read the entire thread before posting your questions. We'll eventually have a FAQ put together, but for the most part, every one of these questions is addressed in the very first post here. The announcement does acknowledge the desire for additional products and support beyond the initial release, however there is simply no way to do everything all at once.
