I have both a series one and series two DirecTV Tivo. Do I have to buy two versions of IC (or should I say why do I need to buy two versions)

You need two different versions because these are two different types of units; the software is different for each of them; ie they are not interchangable.

is the instant cake interchangeble for the 640 series to the 240 series. i.e can I use a instant cake image for a 640 DT series 2 on a series 2 240 or 230 series ?
