I know it is recommended not to use your original drive with instant cake. However, I have already upgraded my 40gb series 2 SA with a 2nd 120gb HD. I have lost the original image I saved with Hinsdale's tools due to unrelated PC problems. I am now having stuttering, freezing, and rebooting when I try to do anything on my TiVo including accessing menus, watching shows, etc. Can I use IC on my original 40gb HD to successfully restore my unit to original condition? If I am having a hardware problem I will need to send it back to TiVo for repair to preserve my lifetime subscription.
Sorry if this has been addressed before but I didn't find an exact situation for comparison.

You can, as long as that 40GB drivde is exactly the same size as the one that was in the unit we used to make the InstantCake image (no way to tell without trying.

How is it that you know which of the two drives is actually failing? Consider running full diagnostics on both drives before doing anything; then take the appropriate action...

I have read of other's experiences with running diagnostics on their HD's. The results were inclonclusive most of the time in that the drive tested OK but still would not run on the TiVo. Has that been the experience here also? If I can put an original image on the 40 gb hard drive and then try it it may point to the 120 gb. Then I'll put an image on the 120 gb and try it. If the TiVo hardware is bad I will try to get it replaced(it has lifetime).
If I proceed in this manner can I still use IC to reconfigure both drives as A & B drives on the new TiVo?

You definitely can. But your description does sound like nothing other than a bad hard drive, and in four+ years, we've not had inconclusive experiences like that; bad drives are diagnosable...
