No operating system
Ok, I'm not saying this is a solution for everyone, but I had exactly this problem. My computer (Emachine T1742) spun up the CD drive to try to boot from it and all I got was "Operating system not found" on my screen. This was with the CD ROM drive connected as the primary slave, and the TIVO drive connected as the secondary master, no other drives connected.
So I tried reconnecting the C: drive as the primary master with the CDROM as the primary slave and the TIVO drive as the secondary master. When I restarted the computer, it promptly booted to the CD drive and ran the instant cake software. My tivo is currently up and running perfectly.
I do not have an explanation for this. I only know that it would not run without the C drive connected as described.

Good news is that my HP Pavilion 6835 does recognize my old HDVR2 Maxtor Fireball 3 40GB hard drive (had to do a low level format on it) as the Secondary Master drive. My issue is that I cannot get the CDROM to boot as the Primary Slave. I have verified the jumper settings on the CDROM and have them set to Slave (only other two options are CS and Master) and when I powerup I go to the setup and tell the system that the primary slave is a cdrom. Reboot and it still states that it cannot find the operating system. I know that this is the correct setting per the instructions, but the cdrom won't cooperate.
I have been able to set the jumpers on the cdrom to master and boot from the setting in setup as the Primary Master. It will go through the Instantcake setup all the way to the point that it is starting the restore, then it states that "restore failed - error restoring partitions, 52% compression. Cannot continue - processing aborting". That is as far as I can go.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
