Sadistic, snide, and now.......sensitive! OK, OK, I apologize. No more nicknames: "InstantCake" it is, forevermore.
Lou, it's a helluva product for $19.99.
As the posts in this forum show, however, and as my own experience proved, InstantCake is very finicky about the computer it dances with. In my case, no amount of changing IDE cables or adding memory would get it to respond on one machine, while it waltzed magnificently on the dancefloor of a nearly identical computer right off the bat. That's the "cake" part of the equation.
When it comes to the "icing," it is still a wallflower in my house. And I believe I have shown I am "willing to do the reading and the work." I think the support you offer through this forum, as I have told you privately, is superb --- but try as I might, following every direction and clue, I have not been able to take advantage of being "Netready": TivoWeb does not respond. I have read the excellent directions carefully, and followed them several times over without result. I don't think I am out of line in asking for more help.
My own snide comment (yes, I 'fess up to it!) about sadism referred to the fact that "unlocking" was a totally unexpected requirement until you kindly pointed me to the right page: your 4/26 posting in this thread did not provide that link, and there was no mention of it in the InstantCake documentation.
I tried to carefully list every step I had taken in my last post; I don't quite know how to provide "more details," but I am ready and willing. At any rate, I humbly ask for help!
Should I download another version of TivoWeb from tivo.lightn.org --- or would that be incompatible with my InstantCake's icing? Do you suspect the problem might be the Cachecard 2.2 driver update instead? Are there files I should check on the Tivo drive? Do I need to edit rc.sysinit, and if so what should I look for? Any clues would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mick
Let me try to address each of your issues separately... and by the way, your posts are appreciated...
1) as for 'very finicky' its a relative term. we've not found it to be any more finicky then the boot CD's that have been floating around for 3+ years now... granted, its not going to work on some computers. keep in mind, that people who have problems are likely to post here, so its going to look worse that it really is...
2) 'icing' is really just reflashing the prom on DirecTV boxes so that additional hacks will work; nothing more, nothing less
3) NetReady and InstantCake really have nothing to do with one another. InstantCake CD's contain a NetReady image which is the same image that is used in our NetReady replacement drive kits; actually, almost the same - our replacement drive kits have the latest CacheCard drivers; the InstantCake NetReady images do not contain the latest drivers, which is why there is that other thread here on how to update the drivers.
So here's the thing to understand -- once you've run InstantCake and built your own replacement drive kit, you are essentially in the 'same boat' as everyone else who has purchased a replacement drive kit from us that is already NetReady. That is why I moved this thread over to the NetReady discussion forum; its no longer an InstantCake issue, if you know what I mean.
Not sure what the specific problem you are having is or what the root of it is - however its likely to be a networking problem or something that went awry during the installation process - that's where we really can't help. You'll really need to roll up your sleeves and keep posting with as much specifics as possible.
Hopefully that clears some things up...
