I have a brand-new CacheCard from 9thTee, which I plan to install when I upgrade with InstantCake. Does the CD you are currently shipping contain the latest driver, or should I plan on downloading a new one?

Thanks,
Mick

InstantCake does not contain the latest CacheCard 2.2 drivers, however the drivers included on the InstantCake CD DO support the networking component of the CacheCard. So...

Build your replacement drive kit using InstantCake, get your unit up and running on the network with the CacheCard installed (its ok to put the memory in - you will get an error upon bootup, don't worry about that) and then go here for CacheCard 2.2 driver update instructions; you can download the small update, install and reboot and you will be good-to-go.

No Tivoweb

Help! Thanks to InstaCake, I have two new working drives on my Sony SAT-T60, with ftp and telnet communication....but no TivoWeb. Here's what I have done so far:

---Followed instructions to "unlock" my new drive after InstaCake installation (what sadist is responsible for that undocumented post-InstaCake step?!) to enable telnet, then installed the CacheCard 2.2 driver update as described above. Unable to access TivoWeb via browser.

---Attempted to install (reinstall?) TivoWeb by sending "PTVnetready.tivoweb" and "PTVtivoweb.tar.gz" to my /var/tmp directory. Still no TivoWeb.

---Repeated driver update installation; repeated TivoWeb install steps. Still no TivoWeb.

Any suggestions would be appreciated...I am totally at the end of my wits! Thanks.

First of all, its InstantCake (not InstaCake); a small detail, but if you missed that one, its possible you made a mistake during the installation process, as well. I don't mean to be snide, but the difference of small detail could make a difference on whether it works or not.

That said... The sadist that created this $15.00 product is not going to explicitly teach the world how to take an InstantCake created drive and do everything possible with it. Clearly its optional for folks to make use of the NetReady feature.

We do have services and kits where you won't have to spend an iota of time dealing with this, but the information is already here if you are willing to do the reading and the work:

Not sure why your scenario is not working but the steps are outlined here.

We know it works, but without more details, its very hard to answer your question.

Ouch!

Sadistic, snide, and now.......sensitive! OK, OK, I apologize. No more nicknames: "InstantCake" it is, forevermore.

Lou, it's a helluva product for $19.99.

As the posts in this forum show, however, and as my own experience proved, InstantCake is very finicky about the computer it dances with. In my case, no amount of changing IDE cables or adding memory would get it to respond on one machine, while it waltzed magnificently on the dancefloor of a nearly identical computer right off the bat. That's the "cake" part of the equation.

When it comes to the "icing," it is still a wallflower in my house. And I believe I have shown I am "willing to do the reading and the work." I think the support you offer through this forum, as I have told you privately, is superb --- but try as I might, following every direction and clue, I have not been able to take advantage of being "Netready": TivoWeb does not respond. I have read the excellent directions carefully, and followed them several times over without result. I don't think I am out of line in asking for more help.

My own snide comment (yes, I 'fess up to it!) about sadism referred to the fact that "unlocking" was a totally unexpected requirement until you kindly pointed me to the right page: your 4/26 posting in this thread did not provide that link, and there was no mention of it in the InstantCake documentation.

I tried to carefully list every step I had taken in my last post; I don't quite know how to provide "more details," but I am ready and willing. At any rate, I humbly ask for help!

Should I download another version of TivoWeb from tivo.lightn.org --- or would that be incompatible with my InstantCake's icing? Do you suspect the problem might be the Cachecard 2.2 driver update instead? Are there files I should check on the Tivo drive? Do I need to edit rc.sysinit, and if so what should I look for? Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mick

Let me try to address each of your issues separately... and by the way, your posts are appreciated...

1) as for 'very finicky' its a relative term. we've not found it to be any more finicky then the boot CD's that have been floating around for 3+ years now... granted, its not going to work on some computers. keep in mind, that people who have problems are likely to post here, so its going to look worse that it really is...

2) 'icing' is really just reflashing the prom on DirecTV boxes so that additional hacks will work; nothing more, nothing less

3) NetReady and InstantCake really have nothing to do with one another. InstantCake CD's contain a NetReady image which is the same image that is used in our NetReady replacement drive kits; actually, almost the same - our replacement drive kits have the latest CacheCard drivers; the InstantCake NetReady images do not contain the latest drivers, which is why there is that other thread here on how to update the drivers.

So here's the thing to understand -- once you've run InstantCake and built your own replacement drive kit, you are essentially in the 'same boat' as everyone else who has purchased a replacement drive kit from us that is already NetReady. That is why I moved this thread over to the NetReady discussion forum; its no longer an InstantCake issue, if you know what I mean.

Not sure what the specific problem you are having is or what the root of it is - however its likely to be a networking problem or something that went awry during the installation process - that's where we really can't help. You'll really need to roll up your sleeves and keep posting with as much specifics as possible.

Hopefully that clears some things up...

Back to the Drawing Board...

Thanks for the clarifications, Lou. Based on what you've told me, I am going to start with NetReady software all over again from scratch.

Three questions:

---does "scratch," in this case mean "unlocking" again? Or does the fact that I can telnet mean that the drive is now successfully unlocked?

---if "PTVnetready.tivoweb" does not install successfully, is there any reason (incompatability with any existing PTVupgrade installed components) not to install TCL v1.9.4 Tivoweb from tivo.lightn.org?

---or, just in case I've dumbly missed out on an important point -- does the Cachecard driver 2.2 update already contain Tivoweb?

If you could dispell just a little more ignorance, I'll go back to work on this and leave you in peace!

Thanks,
Mick

1) scratch means rebuild using instantcake, and therefore the drive will not have telnet open. if telnet is opened, clearly you can skip the 'unlock' procedure, as all that does is open up telnet

2) you are free to go ahead an install the tivoweb stuff tivo.lightn.org; you'll just need to set it up yourself, including the startup files, etc.

3) cachecard drivers are mutually exclusive from tivoweb; there is no relationship between them

How did this go? Any resolution to the problem?

Leaving well enough....

For those of us with an InstantCake-prepared hard drive, a CacheCard, and overall satisfaction (i.e., functioning TivoWeb, etc.) could anyone out there elucidate the benefits of updating the CacheCard drivers?

Do these benefits outweigh the substantial risk of a neophyte messup and resulting jeopardy of satisfaction?

Thanks.

Unless you are experiencing instability with your current system, don't upgrade the drivers. The latest release only addresses a very small subset of folks running on DirecTV units.
