I have read in various places that it is highly desirable to upgrade with the original harddrive type, which has special modifications for video operations - eg relaxed error recovery methods.
I have read that using normal drives will cause intermittent hangs as the drives attempt to be 100% perfect in recovering data, and go into rereads.
Could you please advise what you feel is the bottom line on this matter, and among various drive features (eg rotation speed), whether you strongly recommend any particular features to work with this upgrade.
Thanks,
Kevin
The bottom line is that recently a few folks have started making noise about Maxtor Quickview drives as being "superior". Its pure Marketing BS. Any quality drive will work fine. We've got almost four years of history to prove it, and any recent noise being made is more of a tactic to try to gain a competitive edge - not necessarily to offer a superior solution for customers.
As for drive specs, all standard IDE drives more than exceed the specs required for what a TiVo needs; drive rotation, seek time, etc, will have no impact on your units performance. Its simply a non-issue.
