In a thread on the Silicon Dust forum, with regards to proper CacheCard operation on a DSR6000 unit, jafa wrote:

Also double check the cachectl line in your rc.sysinit... it should read:

/sbin/cachectl -t -p 0:10 -p 0:12

Edit: This is for a DTivo... most SAs have only one database partition so do not have the 0:12 option.

Supposedly (to my understanding) all DirecTiVos with CacheCards are supposed to have parameter because it tells it to cache the specific partitions where DirecTiVos store their database. Yet I don't see that in *my* rc.sysinit file.

Is this command taken care of elsewhere by PTVUpgrade's method? A friend of mine did the same upgrade and said he didn't get any CacheCard benefits until he added this line to his rc.sysinit file.

He suggested I change line 518 from

/ptvupgrade/bin/cachectl -t
to:
/ptvupgrade/bin/cachectl -p 0:10 -p 0:12

According to my buddy:
this suggestion also takes the -t parameter out of the cachecard boot phase, which is what makes it go through the first two (long and annoying!) testing phases. It will now only go through the actual caching phase, which is all you need. Jafa has said that once your cachecard has booted successfully with all three phases, all you need is the third, since the first two are purely diagnostic.

I'd appreciate any feedback. I'm not touching anything until I hear it from Lou. :D

It is my understanding that a very early update of the CacheCard drivers enabled the feature of "autodetecting" the partitions for the DirecTiVo; so although there is nothing wrong with using the "-p" switch, it is no longer necessary.

As for removing "-t" it will speed up your boot time significantly HOWEVER, we don't want you editing the rc.sysinit file AT ALL.

Instead, consider removing the file /CACHECARD_TEST from the root directory... :-)

Fair enough -- big smiles to see that PTVUpgrade has already made an allowance for this. Thanks for the prompt reply!

Just to keep it around, I renamed the file to
CACHECARD_TEST_OFF

...would that suffice?

Yup, that will definitely work - the rc.sysinit looks for the existence of the file "CACHECARD_TEST" so as long as its renamed something else, all will work fine...

Not sure if you'll see this after a year and half...

I just upgraded my cachecard drivers(via the silicondust website) dated 20050218 and the testing part of the bootup works MUCH MUCH faster now.

I would say it's better to test the memory, then to remove the test...you even get a nice boot screen that tells the driver name/date and memory size and dtivo db size...
