If you are not a PTVupgrade customer, and do not use PTVupgrade products, there is no reason to use this specific download, however if you haven't updated your drivers, head on over to silicondust.com and you can download the full set of drivers for installation there.

If you are a PTVupgrade customer, or are using our NetReady products, InstantCake products (they create NetReady drives), or have a TiVoWeb or DVRchive bundle and would like to update the drivers yourself, you can use the included attachment and these basic instructions:

The following instructions will manually update the basic CacheCard and TurboNet drivers on your Series1 Standalone or Series2 DirecTV TiVo without disrupting any other files on your unit. This is particularly important for PTVupgrade replacement drive kits as they have customized rc.net and rc.sysinit files which would normally be modified by the standard SiliconDust configuration utilities. SiliconDust is working on a newer version of their installation utilities which will not disrupt the PTVupgrade custom files, however if you wish to update this critical set of drivers on ANY PTVupgrade customized drives, these files and instructions will do the trick.

These tools are not intended for the novice - you will need to understand the basic use of TELNET and FTP.

1) download the update to your PC and save it into a temporary directory
do not attempt to open the file or uncompress it on your PC

2) open an ftp connection to your TiVo

3) transfer the file, as a BINARY FILE, to the /var/tmp directory of your TiVo

4) open a telnet session to your TiVo and

cd /var/tmp

5) type the following command:

tar xzf ./update-100604.tar.gz

6) type the following command:

./update

7) type the following command:

reboot

Your unit is now updated with latest CacheCard and TurboNet2 drivers!

Additional Resources for Novices

To locate a DHCP-networked TiVo on your network, you can use this tutorial to help you out.

For and example of using FTP to move files to your TiVo and TELNET to connect and run commands, follow these illustrated instructions for installing our NetReady downloads and use the aforementioned files and instructions, instead.

WARNING: Please install these updates at your own risk. Do not do anything on blind faith! Although the installation is relatively simple, if you do make a critical mistake, you could end up with an unbootable TiVo and a situation where you would need to send it (or your drives) to us for recertification. We very much want you to be successful, so if you have a question, please ask it here on these forums and we'll try to help you out.

I have the regular turbonet network card currently - on a PTVupgrade box. Can I run this install, then shut down, install the cache card and reboot to a working cache carded system?

Thanks,
Mike

No, this update only works for units that already have the basic CacheCard drivers installed. If you want to migrate from TurboNet ----> CacheCard, you'll need to install the full set of drivers from our NetReady download area:

http://www.ptvupgrade.com/netready/

If you currently have DVRchive installed, you will lose that, so don't try doing this yourself unless you have a TiVoWeb or NetReady bundle from us.

Can you then please spell out the steps to go from Turbonet to CacheCard on a PTVupgrade box that has DVRchive? There are several areas on PTV's website that discuss NetReady, Tubonet, CacheCard, & DVRchive; but the instructions end up saying either "don't use these if you have DVRchive" or only they refer to upgrading already installed CacheCard drivers or unlocking pre NetReady configured boxes. I bought mine from PTV a year ago, so it's lacking any recent PTV stuff. I can't find anything clear on going from the old Turbonet install to CacheCard without losing the DVRchive & TiVoweb programs.

This is not a simple and straightforward set of steps; it is also a service we charge for. Note that current DVRchive kits do contain CacheCard support, so if you ordered your kit after Feb 1st, you already have the basic CacheCard drivers and can use the update referenced in this thread.

Ok, thanks. I'll probably wait until I get the pending update, get everything working again first, backup the new image, then play with cache card drivers; since I'll have the drive out then anyway.

After I got the email, I performed this 2.2 update last month or so. I see there's a new version dated 5-18... what does the new version enable?

Here is a link to Nick's latest release info.

All-in-all, not a major release, but I try to make these available so folks who want the latest and greatest don't run nic_install and mess anything up.

Eventually, nic_install will be modified to work with out stuff, its just too high on the list for Nick right now...

Your link doesn't work for me. Is this new release available for download for PTVUpgrade customers? Don't want to download/install the wrong one.

Just FYI, that link doesn't work. I'll google for more info, but thanks for the reply.

I've got a SAT-T60 with a PTVUpgrade DVRchive bundle. I order on May 25th. When the TiVo boots up, The CacheCard screen says CacheCard 1.0. Can I/Do I need to install updated drivers? I am having an issue with the TiVo freezing up when paging through the Pick Programs to Record screen, and I was hoping that new drivers might alleviate this problem.

P.S. Would my install procedure be different than what is listed in this thread? The instructions appeared to apply to S1 standalones and S2 DTivos. I've got an S1 DTivo.

I don't know what version you have but I do know the splash screen version # is meaningless... it just hasn't gotten updated.

That said, the install procedure for the 2.2 update worked just fine for me on my Series 1 DTiVo (Phillips.)

I have now used InstantCake twice on a new 160GB Samsung drive and have lost net communications after attempting to install new CacheCard 2.2 drivers.

Yesterday, I put the replacement single-drive in my DSR6000R01 (Series 1 DirecTV) and successfully followed the unlock procedure and then used telnet to follow the 5/18/04 "NetReady Core Utils and TiVoWeb Installation". After the reboot, I no longer was able to telnet, ftp, or even ping the TiVo. After further reading I thought this was due to replacement of the rc.sysinit and rc.net files.

Today, I redid the entire procedure, starting with InstantCake. I brought the TiVo up and went through the "clear and delete everything", followed by "guided setup". Then I unlocked the drive again and followed the procedure at the top of this thread explicitly. I used ftp to transfer the update-051804.tar.gz in binary to the /var/tmp directory. Next I executed the update command. All went without a hitch until I did the reboot, after which I was rewarded by the same result: no net communications.

At this point, I can't see where I made a mistake. I was very careful in following the procedure to the letter! Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Chris

Your IP address will change after the reboot - have you checked your router's dhcp client table to see if the new IP address shows up on the map?

Yes. Unfortunately, it is not there now. (It was before the reboot.)

Seems odd. We know the update works, so without having any more details than what you've provided, I'd have to assume a mistake is being made somewhere... I'd recommend trying again, or at a minimum, get your unit back up on your network, forward the ports and if I can get a chance I will poke around and see what's going on. Can't do anything today, however might be able to take a look tomorrow. you can PM me with your IP info.

As a follow-up; we did make several attempts to update the turbonet2.o driver on this persons unit privately. Upon reboot, the unit is no longer showing up on the customer network with the same IP address. We've verified the integrity of the software release, and also attempted using a slightly newer turbonet2.o module (which is now present in the updated attachement included with this thread) and replicated the problem, once again, on the customer unit.

We've been unable the replicate the problem in our own environment, and can only conclude that the problem resides on the customer's network, perhaps related to the DHCP server/router. We do not have direct access to
cxgrant's equipment, but the next recommendation would be to do a full IP scan on the customer subnet to see if the unit is being assigned a different IP address somewhere else in the environment. Hooking up a serial cable to the unit (InstantCake does enable BASH) would also help in troubleshooting when the network connection is lost.

Meanwhile, people should still feel comfortable downloading these updates, as our tests are showing that it *should* be working. If anyone else is having a problem, or can provide more details, please do post to this thread so we can look into things further.

Thanks,
Lou

A workaround for MY lost net connection

Good thing I didn't have to go to work today! After at least 12 hours, I was able to pinpoint the source of my problem...and now everything is up and running, including TiVoWeb! This is the original problem statement: "I have now used InstantCake twice on a new 160GB Samsung drive and have lost net communications after attempting to install new CacheCard 2.2 drivers."

Lou was also able to duplicate the problem on MY machine after I sent him the IP address. Today, I was able to isolate the comm loss to some interaction between my hardware and updates to the turbonet2.o file. I don't want to bore anyone with the painful details, but just give the rather simple solution. InstantCake deposits on the drive a turbonet2.o file dated 2/4/2004. This one works on my system. I successfully used the "NetReady Core Utils and TiVoWeb Installation" instructions. But after downloading the files from PTVupgrade, I edited PTVnetready.tivoweb to comment out the lines that copied the newer version of turbonet2.o to the lib/modules directory, like this: (# cp /ptvupgrade/modules/turbonet2.o /lib/modules/turbonet2.o). This left the original file in place. Then I performed the install as instructed.

I'm still in the dark as to what the root cause of this problem is, but hopefully this may help some others who are scratching their heads!

Regards,
Chris

What if you can't telnet to your TIVO? is there any way to do this upgrade myself?

If you can't telnet to your TiVo, it sounds like you haven't installed the drivers yet... Please see the very first post here and be sure you understand why this release is available and exactly who its intended for....

Hi, I put a order in thru the site for a warranty repair a few minutes ago (Ray Wright from Detroit, MI) will you let me know about the warranty? I did have some warranty work done on the Tivo in March

Also the numbers after the "3.1.0c" in the version number are not "2" but "1", so is there another DirectTV update I should be expecting soon? If so, Should I wait until after that update is done to ship the Tivo?

Hi, we did receive your order and I looked it up; your original order was in January so the kit is no longer under warranty. There is a $75 (ground shipping included) recertification fee in cases like this.

I strongly recommend you wait until you receive the "2" update - otherwise, the problem will happen again after the recertification.

Here is a link where you can go to submit your service ID with TiVo so that your unit gets upgraded sooner...

During the upgrage process when I type in:

tar xzf ./update-100604.tar.gz

I get a "command not found" message. I obviously don't have the tar program in the path. How can I find it or ftp the right version to the Tivo so I can proceed further in the upgrade process? What directory is it placed in during the original install of the CacheCard software?

That is strange; we put tar on all of our kits, as far as I know. Did you use the NetReady downloads or did you purchase a replacement kit bundle?
