This is a feature built into the tivo: if any process running in a tivosh dies with signal 1, the system reboots itself. You can see the messages in /var/log/tverr:

Jun 16 02:37:15 (none) tivosh[246]: Tmk Fatal Error: Thread died due to signal 1
Jun 16 02:37:15 (none) tivosh[246]: Invoking rule 834: rebooting system

Killing it by the web interface causes the http daemon, which is running in a tivosh, to exit cleanly.

You can also "kill -9" a "tivosh" based app, and it won't reboot the system. It also won't clean up after itself (for example, hanging any port being used by the script).
