Windows PC & Media Center Image

Media CentersA DVR is a "digital video recorder", which has also been known as a "personal video recorder". DVRs record video broadcasts to a hard disk drive, allowing for playback later (which is known as "time shifting").

While DVRs allow you to record your content now and watch it later - like a VCR, they also perform "trick modes" which allow the viewer to pause or instantly replay live TV. Manufacturers continue to add more advanced features to DVR's such as recording directly to DVD, skipping commercials, sharing recordings over the Internet, remotely programming and controlling a DVR via the web, etc.

Windows XP Media Center Edition and Windows Vista's Media Center have DVR capabilities built in. Media centers are computers adapted for playing music, watching movies and pictures stored on a local hard drive or on a network drive, and watching DVD movies. Typically, media centers provide DVR functionality for watching and recording television broadcasts as well. Most media centers also include Internet client software for checking email, surfing the web and reading RSS feeds.

Media centers - sometimes also called HTPC's for "Home Theater PC" - are usually operated using a remote control and can be connected to a television set for video output. A media center can be purpose-built, or you can build one yourself by adding media center software to a PC or some other computer or gaming console like the Xbox.

Media center PCs are often built smaller than usual computers and/or made to look similar to other A/V components such as a receiver so they fit nicely into your entertainment center. In addition, they have special hardware not seen in most personal computers such as a receiver for remote controls and television tuner cards.

by Yog-Sothoth on April 10, 2006 2:22 PM

"Static" DHCP enables devices on your network to always grab the same IP address from your router's DHCP server, with no complicated static IP settings needed on each individual device (you can plug in the MAC addresses and desired IP addresses into a setup screen in your router all at once). In order to use static DHCP, you need a router that supports it... More »

DRM: Stealing Your Security and Rights one DVD at a Time

by Christy Bates on July 11, 2007 8:36 AM

Corporations are inserting their DRM (digital rights management) technology onto CDs, DVDs, and secretly onto our hard drives. Consumers are often prevented from controlling, duping, or even routinely transferring songs and movies they've legitimately bought. We are spied on like criminals, while professional pirates routinely circumvent the controls. We've all been experiencing the frustration of these outrageous intrusions, but more of us need to understand how much DRM violates our basic privacy and consumer rights, and how much it is cramping the potential of the digital revolution. This article lays it bare. Read it. Share it.

How To Record HDTV Programs

by Matt Whitlock on March 10, 2006 12:21 PM

One of the fundamental issues surrounding the adoption of HD is the busy life of the average person. If you've owned a TiVo, ReplayTV, or any other kind of DVR, you obviously know how difficult it can be going back to watching television on the network's schedule rather than your own.
