Portable Media

A DVR is a "digital video recorder", which has also been known as a "personal video recorder". DVRs record video broadcasts to a hard disk drive, allowing for playback later (which is known as "time shifting").

While DVRs allow you to record your content now and watch it later - like a VCR, they also perform "trick modes" which allow the viewer to pause or instantly replay live TV. Manufacturers continue to add more advanced features to DVR's such as recording directly to DVD, skipping commercials, sharing recordings over the Internet, remotely programming and controlling a DVR via the web, etc. Since DVRs are little more than a computer and a hard drive with a TV tuner, hackers have even discovered a way to extract video from a DVRs.

To bring DVR content on the road you need something called a Portable Multimedia Player (PMP) or Portable Video Player (PVP). The Portable player is a small electronic device capable of storing and playing audio and video media files in multiple formats. Content for portables is usually stored on a hard disk or flash memory typically using the popular MPEG-4 video/audio file type.

Using devices like the iRecord and the Neuros MPEG-4 Recorder 2 you can easily transfer TV content to and enjoy it on your portable.

Portable video devices of interest include: Archos, Creative, iRiver, Phillips, RCA, Toshiba, Cowan and Sony.

Getting to Know Neuros OSD - The Analog to Digital Bridge

by Matt Whitlock on December 5, 2007 10:56 AM

...I wanted to give the Neuros OSD a spin. When I first heard about it last year, I knew it was a unique product, but it wasn't until I got my hands on one that I figured out how useful something like this can be. Don't get me wrong, it's not 100% innovation at its best, and while the execution of its secondary features is somewhat flawed, the core of the product can be extremely useful for those in the analog jam... Sony PSP: Turning your PSP into a Portable Digital Video Player

by Doug Felteau on November 19, 2006 1:14 AM

Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) users enjoy an excellent 4.3" 16:9 widescreen TFT screaming for video content. While there are currently over 430 Universal Media Disc (UMD) movies, fewer movie studios including Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Paramount Home Entertainment and Warner Home Video are releasing their movies on the UMD format due to much lower than expected sales for UMD movies. Most PSP owners simply do not want to purchase two copies (a DVD and a UMD) of their favorite movies. So with a dwindling UMD video market, but an incredible portable video screen, what are PSP users to do? More »

DRM: Stealing Your Security and Rights one DVD at a Time

by Christy Bates on July 11, 2007 8:36 AM

Corporations are inserting their DRM (digital rights management) technology onto CDs, DVDs, and secretly onto our hard drives. Consumers are often prevented from controlling, duping, or even routinely transferring songs and movies they've legitimately bought. We are spied on like criminals, while professional pirates routinely circumvent the controls. We've all been experiencing the frustration of these outrageous intrusions, but more of us need to understand how much DRM violates our basic privacy and consumer rights, and how much it is cramping the potential of the digital revolution. This article lays it bare. Read it. Share it.

Neuros MPEG-4 Recorder 2 Review

by Doug Felteau on November 12, 2006 3:41 PM

Neuros believes their MPEG-4 Recorder 2 is the solution for people who underutilitze their portable video devices because of the hassle involved to convert video from DVR or other video feeds and for those of us that still watch the same three overpriced movies we bought on the UMD format in our PSP wishing that we could easily transfer other video content to use on the PSPs gorgeous screen.  Read on to see if we agree. Archos AV300 Hard Drive Upgrade Guide by Glenn L.

by Shane Brinkman-Davis on March 10, 2006 12:21 PM

The AV320's hard drive is very easy to gain access to. It's not a terribly scary or skilled procedure, though you must use caution and take your time. Personally I had never attempted to replace my JBMM 020's hard drive after I saw that it involved either bending part of the body or doing desoldering/soldering. I decided to see what the situation was with the AV320 almost the moment I received it (same day in fact), figuring I'd stop... More »
