DirecTV Debuts HR21 High End DVR

At this year's CEDIA conference, DirecTV finally took the wraps off their latest offering in the DVR space. DirecTV owners with a yearning for some top-notch hardware may finally get their wish, as the "prosumer" and custom install friendly HR-21 DVR has finally been unvield.

Due in production around the end of October, the HR21 serves up some pretty stellar features for serious home theater junkies like a built in fiber HDMI port for long runs, being rack mountable without a Middle Atlantic shelf, and double the storage capacity of the HR20.

What do you think of the all new HR21? Will you be first in line to get one?

(thanks rockratt!)

OK does it record MPG2 or MPG4

Is there any guarentee that your HDTV is getting a MPG-2 - BEST or MPG-4 Lower resolution

Directv has sats with transponders.... TRUE HD is MPG2 and requreas one transponder with download of 26,000 to 32,000 bytes

MPG-4 allows transponder to send 3 signals or stations but only receive HD at 10,000 bytes

Check Specs, Mpeg-2 consolidates 4 or 6 pixals into one

MPEG-4 consolidates 9 or 16 pixals into one.

MPEG -4 OK if watching HD of living room ..not much motion

MPEG-4 HD football ..when runner runs for touch down blurs

MPEG-2 gives a more TRUE HD picture !!!

Now how do you know what QUALITY HD you are paying for ??? MPEG-2 or MPEG-4

Transponders COST $$$$$$$   DirecTV / RedStone cares only about bottom line same as all Corporations

What quality HD are you receiving ????

Wow! That's a really high horse your up on there! Can I ask the specs of your set up, or is this just a rant?

At any rate DirecTV and Dish Network have done a lot to bring HD to the main stream. Yes both of them use Mpeg4, because they have to. Most of their HD bandwidth is taken up rebroadcasting local channels, even the HD novice would be screaming if those weren't available. So they are left with a choice, cut out something that everyone will notice or compress to Mpeg4 that only HD snobs really care about. Companies market to the masses, that's how they stay in business.

By the way my set up is a 52" 1080i rear projection lcd, 1000 watt 7.1 Denon, DirecTv HR-20, and a PS3. None if it is super high end, but everyone that has experienced it is impressed.

Excellant point, you are correct...it is what you want and they can supply.

DirecTV can transmit to those who are not in areas where cable providers are not going to supply.

DirecTV covers all of AMERICA  a great benefit to all !!

My brother is happy :) with his analog TV

Me - I wanted HD in 2000 as promised to FCC 8 yrs prior and ABC, CBS and NBC get free banswith.

I am retired and enjoy my HD.  Have Sony 52" Plasma  in Living room and 42" LCD in BedRoom

I did have DirectTV for 10 years and went DirecTV HD when they begin to offer HD.  I did not use DirecTV dish but three (3) 30 inch dishes , ONE for each satilate :)  Always had signal strength of 92 to 95.  I prefered DirecTV over local Comcast Cable.  I did compare and DirecTV had more HD channels but also a higher quality signal / picture.  Also you have no idea want quality signal you receive from cable company as they own Front and Back end.

Yes I must agree this is "MY THING".

Per conversations with Directv the MPG-4 was to allow for local broadcasts

No problem with DirectTV but they and Comcast Cable lost out to VERIZON with fiber optics to house...many HD chanels.. 30 maybe 40 ? but  they have THE BIG BANDWIDTH.

My cost is same as DirecTV..just more choices.

If not for Verzon - Fiber Optics I would still be with DirecTV.

Still have two (2) RCA HR100 1st direcTV receivers /STB  also have two(2) HR10-250, the tivo type box.  You never know when you may have to move :)

If you've got Fios from Verizon then I can't blame you for wanting to see mpeg2. You've got the bandwidth to spare! I use my local cable company (Cox) for internet and home phone but their prices and HD content don compare with DirecTV. They definately couldn't compete with the Verizon offerings.

DirecTV's new birds are due to come online almost any day now, on a staged rollout through the beginning of next year. They'll be giving Verizon a serious run for HD content then. Check it out.. http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php...

Thanks.  I knew Directv was placing more birds in the sky, but failed to keep -up.

  I will check it out.

One thing for sure my DirecTV equipment will not convert MPG-4, digital or MPG-2 no problem.

With antenia I can pick up local HD channels very well.  So my $$ go to the best HD and selection.

I did same cable for internet and DirecTV for digital and HD

In fact I have gone  through huricanes and still had good DirecTV, however thunder storms  and nothing gets through...but they only last 10 to 20 mins.

DirecTV has done very good in adding HD.  Plus there are more and more HD users with price drops.

They also eliminated the local direcTV installer who wanted to sell the equipment and if not does not have time to install antenia.

Now you see nice white DirecTV trucks operated by DirecTV.  Another great thing was eliminated need to purchase STB...set top box for $300 Plus and now all leased and they take care of installation and problems.... JUST LIKE CABLE.

HD prices today are 1/4 of what they were three years ago and moving down.

Lets not forget that DirecTV also offers an internet service not as fast as cable but for those that the Cable companies do not care about its Fast up to 750,000 bytes...beats phone modoems. In fact I had it installed when cable did not offer internet.

ONE bird and all those transponders ( state of the art ) and more ,, more..more  Channels.

Also DirecTV has ALL of USA as a market :)  I think thats 250,000,000 potenial customers

Eat your heart-out Comcast, Cox and Warner cable.  I saw the congressional FCC hearing about allowing acess to AT&T and Verizon.  Cable company,,OH@! OH! we have so many $$$ invested :(

AT&T said one thing " we have $10 billion to invest" and Verizon " We are rteady to GO @!!! :)

FCC approved and Comcast cable TV monthly bill went from $80 a month to $43.

Spend your time and $$ on what makes you happy !  Remember you are here for a very short time..just passing through :)

I just had the HR21-700 DVR installed by Directv for free.  Total out of pocket for me to upgrade all my DirecTV standard equipment to HD was $19.80, not counting the cost of the HD TV.  This is a really good DVR/DirectTV receiver.  The HD channels are awesome.  I watched the Colts/Tenn game last night and didn't see any blurring.  I watched the Leafs and NY play the other night and I was amazed at how easy it was to follow the puck.  Really had trouble with that with standard tv.

The Guide is definitely different than Tivo's format.  I am still trying to figure out how to setup a Favorites channel list.  The DVR functions pretty much the same way with some minor differences.  Program search is almost identical to Tivo.  One function that I will dearly miss is the two tuner record buffer I had with my DirecTivo DVR.  I can no longer pause a program on one channel and watch another channel.

The remote is a definite upgrade on the DirecTivo remote.  It is very ergonomically designed.  All the important buttons are easily reached with the index finger, (or thumb for you knuckle draggers, lol) as you hold the remote.

Overall, I am very satisfied so far.  I have not experienced any of the lock ups that reportedly occured with the HR20-700 or earlier models.
