I count myself as a Dane Cook fan, though I was probably later to discover him than most (guess I'm not a big MySpaces fan).  Anyway I was very much looking forward to the HBO series and agree with your assessment of the second ep.  I think the entire premise is a bit tired and it will take some over the top personality conflicts to jazz this series up.

I was particularly surprised to find out how normal Dane seems to be when off-stage.  I'm actually more impressed with his performances now than before I had this inside look at his life.
