Network-based PVR To Boost DVR Market

Posted to blog Community Headlines Blog on October 12, 2006 9:49 PM

Electronic News reports that ABI Research, a market research firm, issued a report stating that network-based personal video recording (nPVR) will "radically change" everything from advertising to content distribution on video networks fueling the DVR market which is estimated to grow from 20 million current subscribers last year to over 250 million in 2011. "nPVR offers substantial benefits to service providers in terms of cost," principal analyst Michael Arden said in a statement. "But nPVR has to prove that its technology is as good as client-side DVR boxes, and it raises serious issues with some content providers, issues that they are willing to take to court." ABI believes the question in coming years is how much of the function of recording storage will shift to an operator's network. The nPVR allows any digital set-top box (STB) to act as a DVR through software upgrades without needing a hard drive for... More »

TiVo Series3 DRM Glitch: No HBO For You!

Posted to blog Community Headlines Blog on October 11, 2006 11:37 PM

According to this article at CNET, if you connect a TiVo Series3 to a JVC A/V receiver via HDMI you will uncover a DRM glitch presenting you with an error mentioning that viewing is not permitted! While tests confirmed that the HDMI output on the Series3 passed all video and audio to various HDTVs installed. The problem occurs when using A/V switching equipment such as receivers with HDMI switching (and currently this glitch has only occured while trying to access content while switching through JVC receivers such as the older RX-D702 and RX-D411). Considering the TiVo Series3 does not ship with TiVo To Go features ( Who killed TiVo To Go ), the only way to archive your recordings on a TiVo Series3 are to record the programs real-time to a VCR or DVD Recorder. You can learn more about the wonders of TiVo's DRM here . More »
