Networks Discovering Downloadable TV Shows Raises Viewership

Posted to blog Community Headlines Blog on November 21, 2006 9:39 AM

According to WebProNews , CBS conducted a poll recently which showed that viewers who download TV shows from network sites tend to watch more TV than the average viewer. Also, those viewers downloaded shows they had not watched before becoming new fans of those shows. Also, a recent trend with networks is that they have added canceled shows to the websites including CBS's Smith, Fox's Vanished and NBC's Kidnapped. There seems to be a general frustration with the networks for not paying closer attention to the trend of downloading TV shows from the Web. In a forum about downloading TV shows from the Web said "What a waste. I have downloaded shows for a while and always wondered why the networks haven't gotten into it." Finally, networks have discovered that the Internet is not a competitor but a technology that can actually enhance TV. So, what will this do for... More »

TiVo Releases New Pricing FAQ

Posted to blog Community Headlines Blog on November 12, 2006 3:58 PM

TiVo decided to release a Fall 2006 Pricing Faq due to the large number of confused and angry customer responses after increasing their monthly fees according to Dave Zatz . Q. What happened last Sunday and why? A. TiVo modified its pricing plans to lower the upfront cost for its Series2TM boxes to customers. It also made TiVo pricing consistent for both tivo.com customers and retail customers. Q. How can you justify increases in some of the service fees? A. The overall price that a customer pays for the TiVo box and service came down in most, but not all scenarios. You can still get TiVo service for $12.95/month, but with a 3-yr commitment. The upfront price of the Series2 box was either lowered or went away completely depending on the model. Nielsen Tracking DVR Usage

Posted to blog Community Headlines Blog on November 11, 2006 8:59 AM

According to Nielsen Media Research , 78 percent of DVR viewers watch network prime-time shows that were recorded within two days of their initial broadcast and 84 percent play back shows within three days. 76 percent of viewers aged 18-49 played back broadcast network prime-time programs within 48 hours and 84 percent watched prime-time shows they recorded off advertiser-supported cable networks and 85 percent viewed time-shifted syndicated shows. "The TV landscape is changing rapidly, and as consumers increasingly decide for themselves when to watch their favorite shows, Nielsen will establish new means to track their behavior," said Pat McDonough, Nielsen Media Research's SVP of planning and analysis. "This latest analysis allows clients to better understand how DVR playback affects viewing over seven days. It will enable us to work with clients to determine the most appropriate way to incorporate this data into our measurements." More »

TiVo Changes Political Advertising

Posted to blog Community Headlines Blog on November 10, 2006 9:30 AM

Politicians are struggling to get the word out about their campaigns with TiVo and other DVRs becoming more and more prevalent in households. Because of DVRs, political advertising has attempted to use new media as well with video ads on Goog-tube , Podcasts and Vodcasts . According to StarTribune : Special interests tossed $2 billion at politicians this election cycle. But technology such as TiVo, the Internet, satellite radio, DVDs and the like make it more difficult to reach potential voters with TV ads, which account for the largest chunk of campaign expenses in major races. "Certainly it makes it more difficult to get your message out because people now have the option of viewing commercials," said Mark Drake, communications director for the Republican Party of Minnesota. The article goes on to mention that young people, who are being targeted with the new media ads, simply are not "rocking the... More »

ReplayTV Reincarnated as PC Software

Posted to blog Community Headlines Blog on November 9, 2006 9:22 AM

It takes time to get over a loss. Just recently I have been able to go entire days without even thinking about ReplayTV since they stopped making DVRs last year! In December of 2005, ReplayTV announced a change in strategic direction of producing a DVR for the PC. So, just when I think I'm over ReplayTV, they announce that they are "Coming To Your PC Early November 2006". ReplayTV will require the PC to run Windows XP on a P4 1.3GHz machine. You'll need a decently video card with 128MB of VRAM and a video tuner card. The ReplayTV software is included with some Hauppauge tuner cards. The pricing beats TiVo at $99.95 to purchase the software (and one year of service) and an annual fee of $19.95 per additional year. That's one month of service from TiVo! More »

No Decision in case against Cablevision's Network-DVR

Posted to blog Community Headlines Blog on November 2, 2006 10:13 AM

According to Multichannel News , as of Wednesday, November 1st, there has not be a ruling in the case against Cablevision's proposed network-digital-video-recorder service. The content providers -- including 20th Century Fox Film, Turner Broadcasting System, Paramount Pictures, Disney Enterprises and broadcast networks ABC, CBS and NBC -- claim that the network-based DVR generates a second unauthorized programming "stream" stored on Cablevision's servers. Cablevision's response is that they are "facilitating the customer's fair use" and that their system is no different than today's set-top DVRs which allow subscribers to automatically record and playback programming. The planned Cablevision "RS-DVR" (Remote Server DVR) system is based on Arroyo Network's VOD systems. Arroyo was recently purchased by Cisco Systems with the deal set to close a couple days ago. Judge Denny Chin is expected to rule within the next few weeks. More »

Comcast and TiVo have signed a deal to put TiVo's DVR technology in set-top boxes sold by Comcast. This deal determines TiVo's future in other partnerships which will really determine success going forward for TiVo. While the deal was signed in March of this year and announced last year, TiVo is moving closer to the real-world tryout of putting its technology in Comcast set-top boxes giving TiVo access to Comcast's large customer base which should help TiVo in the long run... but only if cable customer's see the value in the TiVo service. HDTV - Only for the Wealthy?

Posted to blog Community Headlines Blog on October 26, 2006 1:37 PM

Leichtman Research Group released a survey showing that over 80% of the consumers with HDTV make over $50,000 a year. In fact, the average household income for HDTV owners is $89,500 which is 42% above the national average income. In addition, only 1 in 6 households have HDTV which is up from 1 our of 14 households two years ago. While nothing seems surprising or out of the ordinary in LRG's assessment of the HDTV space, one thing that surprised me is that only a third of those surveyed knew about Fev 17, 2009, the federal deadline for TV stations to broadcast only digital signals. While HDTV's long-term sales are upbeating (about 20% of all households get a new TV set each year), that may not be fast enough to beat the federal deadline in 2009. "The government has been unrealistic from Day One," Leichtman says. "The digital cut-off date... More »
