HD Goodness on the Cheap?

Movie Buying Made Easier on TiVo
TiVo and Amazon teamed up earlier this year to offer viewers Amazon Unbox, a cool service for ordering movies (and more) directly from your TiVo. As of today , you no longer need 42 different devices requiring eleventy-billion steps, resulting in an arthritic clicky-finger just to get that movie you wanted to order. The new feature, called "Buy on TV," eliminates the extra steps, offering Amazon's entire catalog for your perusal directly from your TiVo box. Plus, it frees your clicky finger up for real surfing! Blu-ray's quick rise to the top of the DVD industry's food chain is raising some eyebrows with the EU's anti-trust people. Movie studios have until Friday to respond to the Commission's requests for copies of their agreements with Blu-ray. Total HD a Hard Sell
Warner Bros. is having a hard time convincing people that two DVD formats on one disc is better than one, pushing back the launch of the first dual-format discs until next year. The theory is that the dual-duty DVDs will avert a format war and make things less confusing to the consumer. Will the big studios see the value in this? I guess we'll just have to wait and see. So far, only Warner Bros. and Paramount have jumped on this particular bandwagon. More »
Comcast Gets TiVo'd
In keeping with its plot to take over the world, TiVo's partnering up with Comcast , the largest cable provider in the US. Offered as an optional service (for an extra fee, of course), customers will be able to download the TiVo software onto Comcast's DVRs. Comcast will start testing the new service in Boston next month. More »
GPL v3 is Anti-DRM
Friday marked the release of GPL v3 , the first update in nearly 16 years. Barring hardware manufacturers from using DRM, and from locking people out for using GPL-licensed software, has ruffled a few feathers. Even Torvalds is expressing concern over some of the licensing, while others worry that the anti- Tivoization of GPL v3 will cause serious repercussions as commercial users are cut out. More »
Windows Media Center Update
Realizing that it's probably a good idea if one's cable tuner is able to effectively speak to the cable card and Media Center, Microsoft rolled out an update today. The update also addresses several issues with Media Center's extensibility platform, along with other incidental problems - such as being able to actually hear that live TV show you're watching. CBS 5 and Sling Media Partner to Deliver Live, Remote, On-the-Go Broadcasts for Viewers
San Francisco and Foster City, CA – June 26, 2007 – CBS 5 (KPIX-TV), and Sling Media, Inc., a digital lifestyle products company, today announced the implementation of Slingbox technology combined with 3G wireless data and still video cameras to deliver live and still video feeds as well as live in-car broadcasts from around the Bay Area. Blu-ray Rots Away
If you're a Blu-ray hater, prepare for some warm fuzzies! According to a bunch of the folks over at AVS Forums , there's something rotting in Blu-ray Land: the discs themselves. Some of the discs are showing rot spots within weeks of purchase, while others remain unaffected (so far). In what appears to be a steadily growing thread, people are coming forward with pictures of rot on their Blu-ray discs. But as Hollywood crushed Cablevision's plan to offer remote DVR services , troops from the digital frontier banded together. USTelecom filed a brief on Friday, representing a growing collective of telcos, media activists, and consumer rights advocates who support Cablevision's appeal.
