Microsoft Spreads Itself Another Micron Thinner
In its dedication to taking over the world, Microsoft's ramping up its effort to entertain us. The company's just released some slick-looking MCE Extenders so you can hook your PC up to your TV. Using the Extenders, you'll be able to stream just about anything—yes, even HDTV—right to your television screen and it functions as a DVR, too. Plus, you get to do this from anywhere in the house thanks to its wireless bridge. (I'm guessing these units are for people who don't already own an XBOX 360 for this.) But slipping this tidbit deftly between the paragraphs of its other news, Microsoft has also announced its latest beta product: Internet TV. Hmmmmm. More »

Replay TV (remember them) made the transition from standalone DVRs to PC software some time ago. Now it looks like their dabbling in hardware again, but not in standalone boxes. The package also comes with an HD antenna, remote control, USB cable, Quickstart guide and one year of ReplayTV Electronic Program Guide service (annual EPG fee thereafter: $19.95 per year). It's said that ReplayTV Personal HD is compatible with terrestrial antennas, and also most analog cable, select digital cable, and satellite set-top boxes. Features noted by Replay include: Integrated iPod Support: With the new iPod support, users can watch high-def television via their... More »

The basics have been covered pretty well (read Clip+Sling Video Demonstration with Brian Jaquet and Matt Whitlock's Interview with Jason Hirschhorn to get up to speed), but what we haven't known is how it's going to really work. Today some of those "finer" details about Clip+Sling are starting to come to light... Get the whole scoop! More »

Sony Taking on TiVo?
The race to win the number one spot in hybridization of video game consoles and home theater capabilities has left Sony eating Microsoft's dust. Time Warner Cable's "Virtual DVR" Misses The Point
Whoosh! Did you hear that? Yeah, that was the whole purpose of a DVR hurtling past the collective heads of the powers-that-be over at Time Warner Cable . If you've been wanting a DVR, but haven't convinced yourself to fork over the cash yet, Time Warner Cable's new "Look Back" service might just convince you that it's time. Sure, the new service ( set for release in October ) is free. And we all like free. But without the ability to rewind, fast forward, avoid commercials, or watch the shows you've missed after midnight on the day they're broadcast, what's the point? It's nothing more than a virtual hard drive with extremely limited capabilities. And did I mention that it makes you watch the commercials? But hey! It's free! *yawn* More »
