From Matt Whitlock's Mind Over Matt'er at TechLore.com
I noticed this morning that my Comcast DCT-3416 Dual Tuner HD-DVR wasn't displaying its clock, something I rely on when playing with my daughter in the living room before starting work. Upon further investigation I discovered that none of the advanced functions of the DVR were available - no guide, no DVR menu, not even the menu. I got a picture and could change channels, but that was about it.
I ultimately thought the internal hard drive failed (even though I could hear it spinning), which would explain some of the behavior I was seeing. I unplugged it a few times, let it reboot, and nothing. "Time to call Comcast," I thought... though that's certainly not something I ever look forward to.
About 20 minutes later I was getting ready to pick up the phone, and then noticed the clock had returned. To my surprise, all of the features had re-appeared. The DVR, the Guide, and everything else, but with new features and enhancements.

Already present on older Series 2 TiVo hardware, Series 3 and HD TiVo owners now get to join in the fun of pause menu ads. Dave Zatz of Zatz Not Funny reports that the newest update to these units introduces the pause menu ads. This way, you can watch more ads while you skip others!
Fortunately, TiVoCommunity member bfdtv reports that there is a way to hide the progress bar and avoid the additional ads. Sweet... click through to learn more!

“By teaming with SeaChange we are enabling cable operators without OCAP/tru2way deployment plans to increase the breadth and depth of their offering by quickly deploying TiVo set-top boxes that seamlessly integrate VOD in a single, intuitive TiVo interface,” said Tom Rogers, TiVo’s president and chief executive officer. “This solution also enables participating MSOs to take their on-demand offering to a whole new level by highlighting VOD titles within TiVo universal search results. A TiVo Remote For Your iPhone... Only A Dollar
Categories: TiVo HD & Series 3 Software & Peripherals
In these tough economic times, there's not much you can still buy for a dollar. Even the dollar menu at many restaurants is actually the dollar-twenty-nine menu. No more 2 for 2 Big Macs either.
But in the tech world, apparently, you still can get something meaningful and tasty for a buck... how about a TiVo Remote application for your iPhone?
It isn't made by TiVo, so don't expect official support - and it's not overly pretty either... but reportedly, it gets the job done. This third party app even has a search function built in. You can control your TiVo Series 3, HD, or HD XL with this. Pretty cool!

Categories: TiVo HD & Series 3

At least for me, TV watching is a mood thing, and my mood changes often. This is where TiVo Search comes in to save my day.
The exciting new feature displays in HD and can seek out content you didn't even knwo you could get, from lots of providers such as YouTube and Amazon Video on Demand. You can search a lot of different ways; either by phrases, keywords, or even album art.

In Australia, TiVo Opens Up To Game & App Developers
Categories: Standalone DVRs
We're so jealous! It doesn't look like TiVo is warming up to game development for their boxes stateside, but in beautiful Australia, budding Java programmers will soon be able to have their way with the TiVo.
Looks like they'll be able to write "broadband applications" as well, seemingly opening up TiVo units to a wealth of third party applications. This is exciting news indeed, and I think something that we'd like to see available worldwide!

TiVo and Neuros OSD Integration Bounties from DVRupgrade
Categories: Upgrading Portable Devices (iPod, PSP, etc) Software & Accessories
Neuros and DVRupgrade have partnered to bring hackers two new cash money bounties to allow an OSD to synchronize with TiVo's electronic programming guide.
The OSD is primarily used to consolidate all your DVDs and VHS tapes into one box, but, due in large part to it being open source, more adventuresome users are already benefiting from its ability to do so much more (like record live TV, stream YouTube to your TV and music to your stereo, play photo slide shows on TV). And now you can get paid to help it do even more.
From a recent DVRupgrade forums Posting...
(click for details)
"People love TiVo for its robust program guide and related features, and people love the OSD for the portability of its recordings. So, we've come up with a bounty for a project that combines the best of both devices. Namely for the OSD to piggyback on the TiVo's recording schedule and make portable MPEG-4 recordings of those shows that you choose. It's essentially like having TiVo simultaneously record onto a portable device at the same time that its recording to its hard drive. With no file transfer or conversion, you could have all your favorite shows automatically on your laptop, iPod, iPhone, Blackberry or whatever portable device you prefer. Ultimately, this functionality would be perfect for commuters, road-warriors or anyone that spends their days on the go.

Nero and TiVo have released that they plan to partner together to bring TiVo's interface to the PC through a new Nero DVR application. Nero is a premiere provider of media tools for the PC -- famous for their Nero Burning ROM software, used to burn CD's and DVD's. TiVo is famous for its pioneering of DVR technology. Combined, they will likely be a powerful tool for desktop DVR software.
The new software, ostensibly part of a new build of the Nero Ultimate Edition suite of desktop media tools, will have the "look and feel" of TiVo inside the Nero application. More details will be announced at a future date.
