Update Your PTVnet-Networked HR10-250 to 6.3b Using the Slicer (Page 2 of 2)

Page 1 | Page 2

TIVOWEBPLUS ALERT WHEN UPGRADING AN HR10-250 TO 6.3B!!!

Do not create a Season Pass within TiVoWebPlus version 1.3.1 after the 6.3b upgrade, as your Now Playing List may no longer work (selecting shows in the NPL does nothing). If you have already scheduled a Season Pass in TWP, just delete it, and your NPL should work again.

DISABLE ENCRYPTION, ENABLE 30-SECOND SKIP, BACKDOORS, AND HMO/HME(!)

  • rootwrite

  • cp /tvbin/tivoapp /tvbin/tivoapp.orig

  • cd /tvbin

  • mv tivoapp tivoapp.tmp

  • cp tivoapp.tmp tivoapp

  • chmod 755 tivoapp

  • echo -ne "\x3C\x02\x00\x00" | dd conv=notrunc of=tivoapp bs=1 seek=1602412

  • echo -ne "\x10\x40\x00\x2b" | dd conv=notrunc of=tivoapp bs=1 seek=6713220

  • echo -ne "\x24\x10\x00\x01" | dd conv=notrunc of=tivoapp bs=1 seek=2804900

  • echo -ne "\x34\x11\x00\x00" | dd conv=notrunc of=tivoapp bs=1 seek=903436

  • echo -ne "\x24\x10\x00\x01" | dd conv=notrunc of=tivoapp bs=1 seek=1118524

  • echo -ne "\x10\x00\x00\x14" | dd conv=notrunc of=tivoapp bs=1 seek=5724672

  • rootread

  • reboot

FAKECALL

To get fakecall working after the upgrade, edit /ptvupgrade/bin/fakecall.tcl:

Change (line #36) dbobj $ssobj set Complete 7

to

try { dbobj $ssobj set Complete 7 } catch junk { }

RESTORE YOUR "DVRUPGRADE" SPLASH SCREEN

  • cd /tvbin

  • cp AlmostThere.png AlmostThere.png.orig

  • rm AlmostThere.png

  • cd /init/ptv_images

  • cp PromScreen2Version7.NTSC.png /tvbin/AlmostThere.png

Most of the credit for the above should be given to rbautch at TCF (and here) for the instructions. The above procedure is not "officially" supported by DVRupgrade, so don't go asking questions in the Official DVRupgrade Forum in the DVRplayground community. There are several threads on 6.3(a/b) at TiVo Community Forums. Credit for the HMO/HME patches should be given to "mr_zorg" at DealDatabase.

WARNING:  Do NOT use the patches listed above with 6.3e; the patch locations are different in 6.3e. More information on this will be forthcoming.

The latest version of the Slicer supports copying of backported drivers (such as for the Linksys USB200M version 2). It also will download the slices from the DVRupgrade server (if the slices are available).

So if you have 6.3a how do you use slicer without loosing all you hacks? I have tried twice all it does is re-install 6.3a and loose all hacks and bash.

December 16, 2006 11:18 AM

I got my 6.3b slices the day they were released, and simply ran the Slicer on them as noted above. I'm not sure as to why you're having issues.

some more comments, so hopefully other folks don't hit the problem I did. Although I copied over all of the required driver files (ehci-hcd.o,pegasus.o,usb-ohci.o,usbcore.o,usbnet.o) and modified the usb.map as directed, when my box came up I still did not have networking. I found the solution in this post by rbautch:

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/...

as he mentions, the lines

  • product 13b1 0018 Linksys USB200M ver.2
  • product 0b95 7720 Airlink ASOHOUSB
  • product 0b95 1780 Airlink AGIGAUSB

should go in the existing "usbnet" section of usb.map, as 6.3 versions no longer use the ax8817x driver. Once I did that and rebooted, networking worked fine.

Excellent post! Exactly the step-by-step instructions that I was looking for. Thanks for getting all of it together. I greatly appreciate it.

Whenever I try to run the slicer (./slicer 6.3b-01-2-357) I get the following error: 6.3b-01-2-357 is not a valid TIVO sotfware version! Exiting... Any suggestions? I have heard that there are newer versions of slicer (I bought min back in Sept) - where can I get the newer version (1.4?)? Thanks!!

I used instantcake and slicer to build/upgrade my drives. After following the instructions here, I have .6.3a up and running with networking now. The problem is: whenever I do a daily call over network, I get No dial tone failures. The call settings are still set. Any ideas?

December 20, 2006 12:54 PM

WeBoat, I assume you mean "6.3b." Why are you trying to make a Daily Call after the upgrade? Are you trying to get new channel logos?

If I am not comfortable doing the above upgrade can I a: send my unit back for the upgrade b: purchase an upgraded hard drive

December 26, 2006 4:53 PM

I would like to add that this is an excellent post as well. Especially the mention on how to re-slice if you had already sliced to 6.3a. This has fixed all of my audio dropout problems on my HR10-250. And as I also saw mention of tytompg while browsing thru the forums, I have now successfully captured a full quality HD mpeg, so I am in heaven. I only found one problem with this procedure. I no longer have a "Standby" menu option in the main menu. So I would like to ask is there more information on the hacks. I have found several comments about hexedit and such, but am not sure how to fix this problem. Again, thanks, my unit is working GREAT otherwise.

If you have an unsupported ethernet adapter, check out Lou Jacob's suggestion here.

How do I get the 6.3b slices? I have the 3.15f software running with the 6.3a slices reported present. Unit nicely updated using 'cake' and ptvnet, thanks. Ethernet working to the outside, I can ping out to URL's by name. I have my router set to hand out a static dhcp address to the unit by 'Mac'. To get my feet wet, I downloaded newest tivoweb and adjusted init script so I could run it instead of the one that came on the update. My phone line is currently unplugged. When I looked, I saw this already in init DEBUG_BOARD=true I told unit to make a daily call, and it reports success, so it's connecting over the enet? from the article: "If you do not have the 6.3b slices, you should be able to force a Daily Call using your ethernet connection to get them: " "After your TiVo has rebooted, go to Messages and Settings > Settings > Phone > Connect to the DVR service now. The next morning, you will most likely have the 6.3b slices. After you have confirmed you have them (echo mls /SwSystem | tivosh), proceed to the next step." Is it that I have to upgrade to the 6.3a version 1st? Or am I missing something else? TIA

Videog asks a real good question. It looks from what I can see as if the mothership isn't sending them down any more. Does anyone have more detailed instructions for getting them loaded onto a unit if you have them already. I managed to pull them off one of my two HR10-250s. Just started to do the other one and I have the same problem. They won't come down. Been 5 days now and several people on DD are reporting the same. I have the 4 slice files but need loopset-dtv-Series2.slice and any suggestions to get the set into the DB. Alpha Wolfs dbload utility fails with an error. And Suggestions ?

Looks to me like DirecTV stopped sending 6.3b and has restarted sending 6.3a again. I hacked three HR10-250 STBs from 3.1.5f to 6.3b using Slicer from 6.3b slices downloaded by DirecTV on 12/12/2006 at 2:00 AM. I plugged one into a phone line and now TivoWebPlus shows that I have 6.3b dated 12/15/2006 (the day I used Slicer) as active and 6.3a dated 12/20/2006 as inactive. My other two hacked HR10-250 STBs that did not have the phone line reconnected show 6.3b as active and 3.1.5f as inactive. My unhacked HR10-250 has 6.3a and repeated forced and unforced calls do not trigger the upgrade to 6.3b. I posted similar info on the Tivo Commmunity and DBS Talk forums.

Just managed to get the slices. PM me for link. Pretty sure you are correct. From what I am reading on DD. There is also a whole lot of discussion on MFS_FTP not working with 6.3b as well. No details yet on that one.

If any of the guys a DVRUpgrade object go ahead and remove this link.  Getting way too many email...

The slices for 6.3b I grabbed are listed on DD.

SmartFTP works fine, and is free as well.

I believe that SmartFTP is only free for 30 days then it costs $36.95

January 3, 2007 8:14 AM

There is no fee for personal use: I've used it for a few years.

You are right - I get a nag message but it still works.<br />

January 3, 2007 11:07 AM

thanks barefooter. Got the slices. Found some notes about dbload, did the upgrade with 'the slicer' ok. Now on to learn about mfs... etc.

January 8, 2007 2:59 PM

I had 6.3b waiting on my HR10-250 which I zippered a while ago and ran the slicer, now I can not even get a bash on a serial connection. Something looked wrong when it rebooted, it said loading new firmware which may take up to an hour. Time to pull the drive and throw another image at it and reload the zipper.  Network IP was correct. It almost appears as though the firewall is back up.

If it an't broke, don't fix it

January 8, 2007 3:08 PM

I got to where you are when I screwed up running the slicer.  I <CRTRL-C> to copy and killed it.  From what I can tell your only option is to blitz it and start over.  Otherwise your just spinning your wheels.

Videog,  Got MFS_FTP working.   The HR10s really don't like TyStudio.... You want to look on DD for a TMF2TY tool from there download TMF files.  They are rock solid.

February 17, 2007 1:54 PM

Does anyone have a 6.3c update for the "DISABLE ENCRYPTION, ENABLE 30-SECOND SKIP, BACKDOORS, AND HMO/HME(!)" section?  Or do 6.3b and 6.3c have the same offsets?
