Enabling MRV and HMO with a DirecTiVo

Two things that make a TiVo stand out among DVRs: MRV and HMO. MRV (Multi-Room Viewing) allows programs recorded on one TiVo to be watched on another. HMO (Home Media Option) allows TiVos to view photos and listen to music that are stored on a computer. The following instructions assume you have already built a...

I was told earlier when I tried to get the tivo desktop sw to work that it doesnt work with the 6.2 dtv software. now others are saying it works. so does it work with a special install routine or does it not work?

October 9, 2006 8:12 PM

You can easily use TiVo Desktop for HMO; I wouldn't have mentioned it in the article otherwise. The other option is JavaHMO.

sorry I wasnt clear. I meant use for moving video from the dtv dvr. I get the msg regarding no tivos found. as others have, I have no problem getting stuff off to use for dvd or laptop viewing [nfl superfan shortcuts anyone?] but the tivo desktop software doesnt work at all. the hmo 'hack' works fine though using superpatch et al.

Hi,

Like others, I've followed the steps in Yog's extraction article and have had some success.  My Tivo sees my published pictures.  When it comes to extracting video, however, I get the same message that the Tivo Desktop app cannot see any Tivos on the network.  Has anyone gotten around that?

 Thanks!

You can't extract video using TiVo Desktop and a DirecTiVo.

Thanks.  I've been working with that.  I must have misunderstood a thread I read in the forum.  On with TyTool!

Now the HR10-250 can run 6.3a... anyone made any advancements for the 10-250 users in the room?

December 4, 2006 3:07 AM

Why would you want 6.3a?  I've got it running on a HR10-250 on hda3/4 with a perfectly good 3.1.5 on hda6/7 and I'd love to just do a bootpage -f and hook the phone line back up to wait for the 6.2 upgrade.  It's not like there may EVER be a Superpatch-68all or a set_mrv_name68 with 6.3a support.  What a bummer, man.  All that work to get 6.3a networked with Telnet, FTP, TivoWebPlus, etc...only to find out there's no quick patch to disable 6.3a encryption or set_mrv_name....I think I'll drink a 6-pack and try replacing the 6.3a tivoapp on my HR10-250 with the 6.2 tivoapp from my DSR708 trinity....kinda like makin' chille rellenos, heh.

I'm trying to get my brain wrapped around on the info on the site. Great Stuff! From the post above it appears there is currently no way to get MRV on HR10-250. Is this correct? I've got V.6.3a-01-2-357 on my box. I've also got an HDVR2 which looks like a slam dunk. What are the possibilities of MRV on HR10-250? Thanks

December 11, 2006 10:55 PM

No MRV with 6.3a either; sorry.

Is there hope for the HR10-250? I guess I dont understand the restriction. Hardware not supported? Locked out from DTV etc. What did Emil mean above? <"Now the HR10-250 can run 6.3a... anyone made any advancements for the 10-250 users in the room?"> Thanks for the quick respons Yog.

Emil's comment doesn't have much to do with the issue at hand. 6.3a is not built on 6.2, it's built on 7.x.x. There may be hope for HMO, but MRV has been pretty much stripped from the software, although a look in MFS at state/network will show all of the other MRV clients on the network.

Kinda seems like going back to 6.2 on the HR10-250 would give the most functionality for now....I already used Instant Cake to get mine back to 3.1.5f, but now I'm stuck. If I just plug the phone line in and wait to see if I get the 6.2 slices, it will mess up my keyring updates and my keys won't work (because DTV has already sent me 6.3a). At least, that was my understanding (such as it is). Now, if I only had the 6.2 slices for HR10-250 I'd be set. Aha! I found the 6.2 slices on Emule, but alas.... After looking in the index file of all the service nos supported by the archive, it seems 357 (HR10-250) is NOT THERE! rats, now what? Well, four of the five slice files appear to be the same for all platforms...but the fifth slice called: swsystem-440901xx-2.slice.gz where xx is between 16 and 23 depending on your model, appears to not be found in the archive! If anyone out there knows where to find the 6.2 slice file called swsystem-440901xx-2.slice.gz for the 357 service number (HR10-250 model), please PM me or post a link here.... Hmm, I wonder if one of the other Service Nos would work?

I have installed two DIRECTV DVR;s with InstantCake 6.2 and PTVNet 6.2.  One Hughes HDVR2, and One Phillips 708 unit.  I have everything working, networking, telnet, ftp, TivoWeb, TivoDesktop.  But I still have not gotten to get MRV to work.  I just re-read this thread again, and re-ran superpatch-67all-NutKase-1.2.tcl and set_mrv_name67.tcl [location name] and then re-booted.  I still don't see the other dvr in the now playing.

January 17, 2007 8:31 PM

After months of successful HMO & MRVing, my Tivo Server is now showing that it doesn't know the ip addresses of my two dvr's....not sure that it is 'the' problem because I can get pics and music from my computer to play on any dvr, but having difficulty with MRV and am thinking that somehow when the dhcp renewed its license, and changed the ipaddress, it dropped out of tivo server's list, and now tivo server doesn't know where it is....if anyone can comment on how to reset the ip address in tivo server (version 2.3a), I'd appreciate the assistance....I may just reinstall it and see if that works.

Now three Sammys (2 S4120R & 1 S4080R) upgraded with a little help from our friends at PTVupgrade, then Superpatched for MRV & HMO.

UPDATE: Sorry about that ramble folks....it seems my windows firewall had been turned on and that was causing my troubles... once I turned it back off, tivo server suddenly id'ed the dvrs in the server properties performance tab....

I'm having the same problem as Stevin. DSR7000 and Samsung S4080R.  Instant Caked last week 6.2 also PtvNet at the same time. Both Superpatched.

Have still not gotten MRV to work.  I've gone through this thread multiple times, and even completely redid one of the machines. Have rebooted several times.  The DVRs still do not see each other in now playing.

Obviously, my network connectivity is fine, and HMO works great.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what to look at or try?

Thanks

You could try setting the network parameters in MFS:

1) Download the netconfig.itcl module from DealDatabase and drop it into your TivoWebPlus/modules directory; do a Quick Reload of TWP.

2) Go to the Netconfig screen in TWP. Either click use DHCP, or enter static IP info (do not reboot).

3) Edit your /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.author file and comment out any lines referring to static IP or DHCP.

4) Reboot the TiVo.

The above method is what I recently used on all of my TiVos, and I haven't had any issues since.

Thanks for the reply, Yog

I delayed in responding because I wanted to try your suggestion.  When I did what you said, I lost touch with the TiVo I tried it on. I got my serial cable and used bash to go in and put the static address back in the /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.author file and rebooted a couple of times in order to get it back on the LAN.  I noticed at the time that ifconfig said that ther was no ethernet. Only the local port showed up.

I messed about a bit more and finally came to the conclusion that   netconfig.itcl must be broken- at least for static addresses.  If I used the author file way of doing static, I got an address (but no MRV) and if I used the netconfig/tivoweb way, I got the symptom of having no address at all- even though I have set the static address in Tivoweb.

I tried having the flag_swap NETWORK set both possible ways but never figured out which way to have it.  To make things (hopefully) easier to have predictable DHCP, I created DHCP reservations for both Tivos in the ntwork.

What I am trying to understand is where in the boot process the netconfig method sets the IP and does the flag possibly undo that setting.  I can't figure out how to keep them from fighting each other.

Would it be better to do away with all  of this and just set the address in the first possible place in the process? Maybe in the original rc.sysinit file?

Sorry to be rambling, but I have been wrestling this all afternoon and my brain is about cooked. I really want to get this MRV going!

Thanks

Netconfig.itcl works for a static IP...I've used it for that myself. All of mine are currently set to use DHCP since I have my router set to assign IPs by MAC address.

Which mode did you have the flag_swap NETWORK in, when using DHCP?

I am using DHCP with my router set to assign IP by MAC just like you.

I have worked another 3 hours today trying to wade through posts all over the place and ran across one that talked about looking ar the tvlog file to see if I can see any references to the other TiVo's IP address. I don't.

For some reason I don't even think the MRV broadcasts are even happening (I think that is the term for them)

So I'm still stuck!

Thanks

Here are the pertinent sections of my rc.sysinit.author file:

#STATIC_IP=192.168.1.98
#NETMASK=255.255.255.0
#BROADCAST=192.168.1.255
#GATEWAY=192.168.1.1

# Check flags for IP address (we recommend you just stick with DHCP)
#if [ -f /init/ptv_flags/DHCP_ON ]; then
#    /ptvupgrade/bin/dhcp_enable.ptv
#    fi
#
#if [ -f /init/ptv_flags/STATIC_ON ]; then
#        ifconfig eth0 $STATIC_IP broadcast $BROADCAST netmask $NETMASK
#        route add default gw $GATEWAY
#    fi

Notice that all of the lines are commented, so no IP info is read from rc.sysinit.author.

I should also add that you may want run rbautch's enhancement script to check for the presence of any MRV expiration certificates.

In TivoWebPlus, navigate to /mfs/State/KnownHost; your other TiVos should show up there.
